Q: What is screen printing?
A: Screen printing is perhaps the most ancient form of printing. In fact, the first person to use screen printing probably lived in a cave!

He or she and made a stencil from bark or animal skin, then blew pigment onto the stencil through a reed. Voila! Instant cave art!

Through the centuries, the process has been greatly refined. The Chinese and ancient Egyptians used wooden block stencils to add colourful prints to papers and fabrics. Screen printing was used also to make flags during the Crusades. And in recent times, pop artist Andy Warhol "posterized" silk-screening to create his own unique style.

The screen printing process itself is actually quite simple. A screen (similar to a window screen but much finer) is stretched tightly on a square, rectangular, or tubular frame. Part of the screen is blocked with a stencil, leaving open mesh areas that will become the printed image. Next, ink is deposited on the screen and a flexible plastic or rubber blade (called a squeegee) is used to press the ink through the areas of screen not blocked by the stencil. As the ink passes through the screen, the design is "printed" on the item below.

Today, advances in techniques, inks, and automation let Matthews Drew quickly and affordably create images on just about any surface – from a paper poster to a glass mug! Chances are, if you need a graphic image, Matthews Drew "Can-Do!" it! For more ideas, check out our photo gallery portfolio!

Q: How long does it take to get a finished print job?
A: It depends on what you order. However, with today's technology, Matthews Drew can turn around a print job – from concept to finish – in a surprisingly short time. In fact, the average turnaround time for a digitally-produced product is just three to five days. If that's too long, our special emergency services can deliver a short-run, large-format graphic project within 24 hours!

Orders from our stock catalogue are generally shipped within three business days. Custom orders that are repeats and don't require a proof are ready in three weeks. Custom orders that require a proof are typically delivered three weeks after receipt of the final approved proof. New custom orders generally take about four weeks.

Please keep in mind that delivery times quoted above are approximate, and may be shorter or longer depending on the simplicity or complexity of the specific job. Of course, we'll try to accommodate whatever lead time you specify – just ask us!

Q: What are quantity breaks?
A: The more you order, the more you save, because designing artwork and setting up the press for your job take the same amount of work whether we print one or one million of your product. When we quote a job, we typically offer prices for three different quantities, called "quantity breaks," so you can see which is more economical for your needs. Your account rep is always happy to provide quantity breaks on your quote. Just ask!
